European Toyota fans are still reeling from the double whammy of discovering that they The Corolla won’t be available and the fact that the (GR86) will be left there after only two years on sale is finally something to be happy about. The Corolla isn’t heading to Europe, but it’s rumored to have an uprated three-cylinder engine and the same soul as the two-seat Maurizio version of the Corolla we first saw earlier this year (the GR Yaris) in Europe. Specific version G16E-GTS 1.liter turbo Powered by a supercharged triple that produces 257-268 hp, depending on the market, and 266-273 lbft (360-370 Nm) of torque, Autocar now reports that the Toyota engine’s 300 hp (304 PS), 295 lb-ft ft (400 Nm) version that made its debut in the Corolla Morizo and Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda’s racing moniker was carried over to the GR Yaris engine.
That should be enough to shave at least 0.5 seconds off the base car’s 5.5-second zero-to-62-mph time and possibly more depending on how aggressive Toyota is with its weight-saving plans. Like the Corolla Morizo, the hottest Yaris will lose its rear seats but retain its stereo and basic air-conditioning system, the report quoted Naoyuki Sakamoto, chief engineer of Gazoo Racing (GR Corolla Morizo). Also migrating from is a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission, but apparently there’s no room for the cool triple-outlet exhaust.
However, the launch and drift modes that have become common on all-wheel-drive performance cars will not feature in future GR models. Last week it was revealed that Toyota is testing a series of GR86 coupes equipped with the GR Corolla’s G16E-GTS engine, which replaces the usual four-cylinder naturally aspirated boxer engine. Taikyu were built to compete in the race series although Sakamoto did not rule out the possibility of production cars in the future.
